what are their faults? in comparison to the alternatives, I mean? 

dravidian parties pretty much took the mantle of justic party in 1920s madras state and expanded its scope. Only for a brief period in between did Rajaji managed to capture power and impose brahminism on the madras state. kamaraj nullified all the crap rajaji did, in the name of free market.

DMK were successful because they had the right vision. and its leaders were smart. especially karunanidhi.TN owes a lot to this man, inspite of him sucking up to Sonia gandhi in the final days of tamil massacre in sl.

Rajnikanth is terrible. both as a person, and a politician devoid of ideas. He's a caricature of the worst aspects of Indian middle class. An ideologically vacant, and comically incompetent fool.
