Bengaluru: A rare fungal infection was witnessed among eight Covid patients who were admitted to the city’s Medical College and Research Institute. Six of them succumbed.

Sino-orbital invasive disease is an aggressive infection of the eye socket and sinuses and it can prove deadly, in cases where it spreads to the brain. The disease is caused by mucormycosis, a fatal fungus. The aforementioned eight cases were analysed by researchers at the Minto Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.

In total, the team examined 2,684 Covid patients from September 1-November 30, last year. These people had moderate to severe symptoms of Covid. Patients with displaced eyeball, hanging upper eyelid and Covid manifestations such as conjunctivitis and ocular pain were subjected to further medical investigations.

27 patients had ocular manifestations of Covid, but the sino-orbital invasive disease was found in eight patients. The two patients who survived are males aged 37 and 60.

Dr B.L. Sujata Rathod, director of the institute told the Times of India, “Their chances of vision recovery are poor. It is an irreversible cause of vision loss.”

This is the first such analysis in India and the findings have been sent for a peer review, according to the researchers. Dr K. Kiran Kumar, alumni of AIIMS Delhi and an assistant professor at the institute, headed the analysis. Six of the eight patients had symptoms at the time of admission.

Most of them were aged over 60. The usage of steroids in treatment of Covid canbe one of the risk factors, but the same cannot explain the incidence of co-infections in the patients the doctors analysed.

Kumar said, “There is a need to look for other mechanisms for this rising trend.”

He added, “We are making every effort to monitor the two survivors.”
