r2d2 Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 A teenager got a job at a Kroger store and stole nearly $1million in the space of two weeks before using it to buy clothes, guns and cars, police say. Tre Brown, 19, is accused of pocketing around $980,000 by pretending to cash in returned items which investigators claim had never existed. Kroger employees noticed the alleged scam and Brown was arrested after crashing one of the two vehicles which authorities say he had bought with the money. Detectives in Gwinnett County, Georgia claim that Brown made more than 40 fake transactions after he was hired at the grocery store in December. The returns ranged in price from $75 to more than $87,000 and the money was transferred to several credit cards, police say. Police believe he started with smaller transactions and became more ambitious as he 'continued to get away with it'. 'This person who was stealing decided to go real big,' police corporal Collin Flynn said, according to Fox5. 'This employee was essentially creating fake items. Taking those items and returning them to a credit card he had and just making up prices for those items,' he said. 'It seems like this is a rare case where things snuck through the cracks and the person was able to get away with a large amount of money in a short period of time.' Brown is said to have splashed the money on 'clothes, guns, shoes, and two vehicles', one of which was totaled before his arrest. A 'large sum of the money was returned' after Brown was arrested, the police department said, without specifying exactly how much. Brown is charged with theft by taking, which lawyers say is likely to be deemed a felony under Georgia law if more than $500 is at stake. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence between one and ten years. Quote

The store systems are dumb to accept items worth 87K in a single transaction without supervisor approval. Even a pet store needs manager approval if the returned items are worth more than 50 bucks Quote

He would have continued his fraud to become a multi millionaire without getting caught due to flawed store systems. But for his bad luck, he got into an accident that exposed his disproportionate wealth and got him caught. I'm sure some people at the store and their head office also got fired too due to not implementing bulletproof systems. Quote
