DRDO is working on jet engine kaveri  development from last 40 years but that did not met expectations  ... so they shelved that project and took engines from GE and then tried to revive kaveri engine with the help of French company as part of rafale offset deal, but not moved forward as HAL was out from the project and reliance came in... future don’t know

hundres and thousands of crores go to feed this parasitic defense eco system in india - nice cushy jobs with zero output, low grade products which cannot be exported anywhere - but govt keeps spending because defense is soooooooooooo important . who cares to occupy india? except kashmir or arunachal which is disputed no foreign country is interested at all. On other other hand millions of indians want to move abroad.

Why can’t they just reverse engineer the engines just like Chinese and make some modifications and upgrade

Yes.. engine and radars are not Indian made. But the defense manufacturing ecosystem is building up. Private players coming into picture. Defense corridors in UP and TN. Our defense exports increased several fold since 2016. Things will improve further.
