Why do some americans use Ham radio or amatuer radio license?

Talk to aliens 

For a survival situation, ham radio allows you to contact people worldwide without any infrastructure. We can literally throw a wire in a tree and talk to people all around the world and do that very regularly. Yes, you can only talk with other hams, but there are many around the world. It can be a great way to pass information around if infrastructure goes down or is unavailable.

As its own hobby, it's a fun way to meet people around the world and to learn and experiment with electronics and antenna design. I'm an engineer so I particularly enjoy ham radio for the technical aspect, but it can be very useful in emergency situations.
