Instead of listening to what you want to hear, and seeing what you want to see, you have to discard that and see situations for what they are. Without doing so, you cannot trust what someone tells you, nor can your trust that your perceptions are accurate or truthful. People lie to themselves all the time.

that's true. Most of us are selective and biased towards things we see and hear.  That's easy at that moment but becomes hard later.
