Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Report Posted March 25, 2021 Quite possibly the greatest mainstream Tamil director that no one outside of TN knows. He passed away. a week back. I didn't know because I didn't follow the news. He was like Chennai's wachowski sisters (the makers of matrix). flawed understanding of systems, but absolutely brilliant with his set pieces, conviction in his beliefs, and the nicest man in the movie industry possibly. Chennai is losing its great sons one by one, in the path of integrating with a soulless Hindutva casteist collective called India. Such a sad loss. He was hardly 60yrs. Could've made many more brilliant and influential films. Already all his films are amazing (except one). Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Author Report Posted March 25, 2021 I saw his first film Iyarkai many times at the cinemas just to marvel at the gorgeousness of this shot in the thumbnail. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Author Report Posted March 25, 2021 He even made a movie where the hero saves the day for 'India'. But thankfully, its only a vehicle for him to talk about how tribal people are not welcome to be part of that India. amazing movie, even if its a little naive. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Author Report Posted March 25, 2021 Here he talks about land rights during early chola era, and their genius in construction, as a counter to some Ambedkarites insistence that Chola king was a casteist fcuk who gave huge chunks of land away to dominant caste groups. and he talks without any sense of ethnic pride or frustration at how TN eventually turned out. I wish I had his composure when I think about stuff. The guy is an open communist. Also lot of conspiracy thinking, that is normal for a person seeped in marxist thinking, and hasn't had much formal education beyond middle school. Would have loved to sit and chat with him. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Author Report Posted March 25, 2021 The response to his passing away has been overwhelming. It seems he touched a lot of people's lives. Amazing guy. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted March 25, 2021 Author Report Posted March 25, 2021 He wanted to make a movie with Tamil Sangam era as the backdrop. sad it didn't happen. cant even begin to imagine how amazing that movie would've been. Quote

Just 4 movies teesadu. all his films have a huge canvas and look rich (except one which had very bad sets), but the stories he picks are very local. andukey non-Tamils connect avvaleremo.. especially people outside of Chennai. try to watch his movies and see if you like them. heavy political symbolism (communist) and gorgeous backdrops. Especially his first film Iyarkai is a stunning work of mainstream art. a heartbreaking/mixed love story. He literally uses films to do propaganda, so some may be put off by them. But an ultimate storyteller. 1 Quote
