Class X student abducted and gangraped in Meerut , commits suicide

A minor girl died within hours of being abducted and gangraped by four people at a Meerut village on Thursday. While police said the 15-year-old died by suicide, her family said the Class X student was poisoned by the accused.

Two people have been arrested, while a search is on for the remaining accused, police said.

As per the FIR lodged by the victim’s brother, the girl was en route for her tuition classes when she was intercepted by a fellow villager, who, along with three others, forcibly took her to an abandoned house, where they took turns to rape her.

“When she did not reach home at the usual time, we went to the tuition centre, but there we were told that she had not come. We then launched a fanatic search but to no avail. When she reached our house late in the evening, she was bleeding, her clothes were torn and she could barely speak. We rushed her to the hospital, where she succumbed,” the brother said.

 

Meerut SP Keshav Kumar said, “We received information on Thursday afternoon that a minor has died in a village in rural Meerut. Senior officials reached the spot and we spoke to the family. Prima facie it appears that the girl died after consuming poison. A suicide letter was discovered in which she named the main accused… An FIR has been filed for gang rape and murder and two arrests have been made.”

However, the girl’s family says she was administered poison by the accused. “The police are saying there was a suicide note but the fact is she was murdered. It was they (the accused) who gave her poison,” the girl’s uncle said.

Former UP chief minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav hit out at the state government over the incident, tweeting in Hindi, “The news of the kidnapping, gangrape and poisoning of a student in Meerut is extremely sad and fear-inspiring for society.”

In a thinly veiled dig at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Akhilesh added, “If the star pracharak gets free time from publicity, he should pay attention to this too.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yogi Adityanath attacked the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF) for a lack of importance given to “love jihad” in the stat. He was addressing an election rally in Kerala on Thursday.

The BJP leader questioned why there is no love jihad law in Kerala. He said, “We passed the love jihad law in Uttar Pradesh then why not in Kerala? In 2009, the Kerala High Court had called for a law to address love jihad, why has no law been made by both parties?” However, Yogi is slightly confused about the details, as in 2009 Justice Sasidharan Nambiar had dismissed claims of love jihad after studying a report filed by the then DGP Jacob Punnoose on the matter .

The saffron party leader also accused the LDF and UDF of their supposed secret agreement to loot the state by diverting funds given by the Centre to their party members and family. He also added that the Kerala Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has been deeply involved in the gold smuggling case. Interestingly, Yogi added that to ensure the safety of women in Kerala, to ensure that the youth of Kerala get employment, to ensure fair returns to farmers and fishermen, one should elect BJP to power.

Meanwhile, a newlywed, belonging to the minority community, was allegedly gang-raped by three men in front of her husband on March 31 on Agra-Kanpur highway when they were returning home after celebrating Holi. The accused also looted Rs 10,000 and gold jewellery and fled after the incident.

Twelve suspects were detained in connection with the death of a minor Dalit girl in the Akrabad area of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh on February 28. According to reports, police discovered signs of sexual assault on the semi-naked body of the girl. The girl’s skin had peeled away from being dragged through the fields, and there were deep and numerous nail marks on her body said police sources.

This incident has brought up horrific memories of the young Hathras girl whose similar violation in September last year made national headlines. The 19-year-old Dalit girl was waylaid while she had gone to collect fodder for animals. She was found unconscious in the field with serious internal injuries. She died a fortnight later in a Delhi hospital.

In August 2020, a minor was allegedly raped and singed with cigarette butts by two men in Gorakhpur. According to media reports, the girl, daughter of a brick kiln labourer, went to fetch water from a hand pump when the two accused forcibly took her to a hut on a motorcycle and allegedly raped her. They also tortured her by inflicting burn injuries on her with cigarette butts and fled when she fell unconscious.

Another spine-chilling gang rape and murder case of a 13-year-old was reported from UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri district in August 2020. The minor’s body was found in a sugarcane field, reportedly owned by one of the accused, with her father claiming that she was strangled, her eyes gouged out and tongue cut.

The Uttar Pradesh CM started his campaign for BJP in the poll-bound state on Thursday morning from Haripad, Kayamkulam. The Kayamkulam public rally was followed by roadshows in Kazhakoottam and Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram in the afternoon.
