One way or another he defeated them 7 times. Of course he had selfish motives. 
 

do you think Lord Rama would kill Ravana if not for his wife? Selflessness is overrated. everyone has their own self interest.

Offcourse  ramayana clearly states that the purpose of lord rama going to sri lanka is to bring his wife by defeating ravana , loka kalyanam kosamey ani evaru chepparu ?
