My travel experience with Air India in light of US travel ban from India.
I am a H-1 b visa holder and traveled alone with my son (U.S citizen) in USA. Travellers from India to USA are exempted from travel ban with a copy of birth certificate and passport of the child.
Problems I Faced:
Initially I was not allowed to checkin at Air India Counter in hyderabad saying I hold h-1B visa.
I arrived at the counter 4 hours before flight departure time. Due to mismanagement and not proper communication from higher authority of Air India to Air India staff I went through a lot of stress during my travel.
We had contacted Center for Border Protection, U.S embassy in India . Two consulate officers called directly to my mobile and confirmed that I am eligible to Travel. Inspite of multiple confirmations from US authorities, Air India failed to approve my travel at the very last minute. Finally 20 mins before my boarding they granted my boarding passes.
Reached Delhi. Again in Delhi the whole story repeated at midnight 1:00 AM . They again made a few phone calls and let me through.
After reaching SFO immigration was very smooth. I cleared immigration in 10 mins.
Before all of this , as soon as proclamation was announced i contacted Air India customer care multiple times and they did not give me any information. But in airport they made go through this whole ordeal. We even reached out to DHS on May 3rd to understand what documentation is required.
As per officer in Indian Embassy, they gave very clear instructions to all Air india higher officials about all the exemptions yet they failed to inform their subordinates.
Travel date : may 4th
Hopefully atleast now air india staff understands who needs to be allowed and who should not be allowed.
Advise: please be at airport well in advance
When air india staff causes trouble, try to reach out to higher authorities as quickly as possible

I have emailed US embassy in Hyd, According to them

1. you can go with a US Citizen kid both parents. Carry copy of birth certificate

2. you can go to US if your Citizen kid is already in US and you carry copy of birth certificate and passport of your child

3. If your US Citizen kid stays back in India and you travel to US alone, its completely up to the CBP officer as the intent of the regulation is to facilitate family reunification.
