Types:

Provoked- After long drive, after being bedridden for some ailment[ Fractures etc], or being on hormone injections, pregnancy.

Unprovoked: With no provoking factor. Work up needed further[ Hypercoagulopathy panel to see whether person has hereditary risk for clots]

 

Sometimes clots could be due to malignancy[ Especially in middle age group, then one need CT chest, abdomen and pelvis for malignancy work up]

Duration of anticoagulation is :6 months usually. Again this is your physician discretion.
