in 1977. It was a disaster especially in our village. Many people people died in their houses. The village priest shut himself in the garbhagudi thinking he will be safe but was dead by morning. Only those who had some sort of cyclone shelters and could go up them survived. Many died from snake bites as well.

Sendraal started his political career there by participating in a huge relief program on behalf of congress party. His organizational skills were noticed then.

Close to 30,000 people were swept away by the giant ocean wave over Machilipatnam town on the night of the cyclone of November 1, 1864. Following the great tragedy, Manuel Fruvall had constructed the memorial in the memory of his brother’s family and 30,000 people of this tiny town who died in the cyclone, at Bandarkota village near here.

At this time, Vijayawada population was 4000. So think about the scale if deaths and distruction
