1960 :: Milkha Singh In Rome Olympics

Image

Singh was persuaded by Jawaharlal Nehru to set aside his memories of the Partition era to race successfully in 1960 against Abdul Khaliq in Pakistan, where a post-race comment by the then General Ayub Khan led to him acquiring the nickname of The Flying Sikh. Some sources say that he set a world record of 45.8 seconds in France, shortly before the Rome Olympics in the same year but the official report of the Games lists the record holder as Lou Jones, who ran 45.2 at Los Angeles in 1956.[11] At 1960 Olympics, he was involved in a close-run final race in the 400m competition, where he was placed fourth.Singh had beaten all the leading contenders other than Otis Davis, and a medal had been anticipated because of his good form. However, he made an error when leading the race at 250m, slowing down in the belief that his pace could not be sustained and looking round at his fellow competitors. Singh believes that these errors caused him to lose his medal opportunity and they are his "worst memory".Davis, Carl Kaufmann and Malcolm Spence all passed him, and a photo-finish resulted.

RIP: Milkha Singh, the Flying Sikh

The Flying Singh, as legendary athlete Milkha Singh is popularly known, breathed his last this morning (the night of June 18, IST) following days of suffering from COVID-19. A single life with various dimensions, Milkha Singh represented India in several international sports events, from the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games to the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, and the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He lost his wife to the same deadly virus just five days ago.

A Commonwealth Games gold medalist, he had had an uphill journey starting from the days of violence and communal disharmony preceding the partition of India. Born in Punjab Province, British India (Now in Pakistan), he saw the worst of the partition that uprooted his family and left him orphaned at a refugee camp. The massacre of Hindus and Sikhs in Punjab Province took three of his siblings away. Disillusioned with his gloomy life at refugee camps in Old Delhi, he mulled over the idea of becoming a dacoit. However, he was destined to do something bigger and greater. The rest, as they say, is history.

On his fourth attempted, he was recruited to the Indian Army in 1951. He was introduced to athletics while stationed in Secunderabad. Since then, he had no looking back. His success in the 1958 Asian Games was a steppingstone for his promotion from a sepoy to a junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army. In 2001, he refused the Arjuna Award from the government, reasoning that the award should recognize young sportsters, not a 70-year-old like him. Once at a college function in Goa in 2014, he said, "The awards nowadays are distributed like 'prasad' in a temple. Why should one be honoured when he or she has not achieved the benchmark for the award? I rejected the Arjuna I was offered after I received the Padma Shri. It was like being offered an SSC certificate after securing a Masters degree.”
