SanDisk is Western Digital's brand for flash memory products, including memory cards and readers, USB flash drives, and solid-state drives. The company was acquired by Western Digital in 2016.

As of March 2019, Western Digital is the fourth-largest manufacturer of flash memory having declined from third-largest in 2014.^[1][2]

 

SanDisk was founded in 1988 by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra, and Jack Yuan, incorporated at the time as SunDisk.^[3] SanDisk co-founder Eli Harari developed the Floating Gate EEPROM which proved the practicality, reliability and endurance of semiconductor-based data storage.^[4]

In 1991 SanDisk produced the first flash based SSD in a 2.5-inch hard disk drive form factor for IBM with a 20 MB capacity priced at about $1,000.^[5]

On May 10, 2000, the Toshiba Corporation of Japan and the SanDisk Corporation said that they would form a new semiconductor company to produce advanced flash memory, primarily for digital cameras.^[6]

SanDisk was acquired by hard disk drive manufacturer Western Digital on May 12, 2016 in a US$19 billion deal.^[7][8]

 

 

Sanjay Mehrotra is president and chief executive officer at Micron Technology.

Mr. Mehrotra joined Micron in May 2017, after a long and distinguished career at SanDisk Corporation where he led the company from start-up in 1988 until its eventual sale in 2016. In addition to being a SanDisk co-founder, Mr. Mehrotra served as its president and CEO from 2011 to 2016, overseeing its growth to an industry-leading Fortune 500 company.

Prior to SanDisk, Mr. Mehrotra held design engineering positions at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., SEEQ Technology and Intel Corporation.

Mr. Mehrotra earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley and is a graduate of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program (SEP). He served on the board of directors of Cavium, Inc., from 2009 to 2018. Mr. Mehrotra holds more than 70 patents and has published articles in the areas of nonvolatile memory design and flash memory systems.
