Aishwarya as Mandakini, and Nandhini, and Karthi as Vandhiya Thevan are far more central to the story, and the rest of the cast revolve around them. I think the story is overrated, and outdated (not Bahubali level outdated). Don't even know why mani is making the movie now. Story starts with a messenger (Karthi) taking a (secret) message to the ailing Chola king living in Tanjore. Then things spiral from there, and get close to a full blown internal war for succession (no battle sorrrry, although there are some battles happening in the background, and in flashbacks) I'll tell you the ending, because its the least interesting part of the book. In the end, Raja Raja Cholan (Ponniyin Selvan) gives up his throne to his uncle Uttama Cholan. That's it. The best part I liked about the book is Arul Mozhi Varman's (Raja Raja Cholan) introduction, and his brief fling with a girl who helps him in SriLanka. Rest of the book was frankly a bore, on hindsight. Its like Game of Thrones without the s3x and smartarse like Tyrion. The description of Elephants and elephant riding is the best part of the book. There's no way to translate that magic on to the screen. I don't think any mainstream director in India has the talent to do it. Quote
Raven_Rayes Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 The actual hero of the movie, the one playing the title character 'Ponniyin Selvan' aka Arul Mozhi Varman is Jayam Ravi plenty of tamil people are disappointed by this choice But I love this choice. The guy is handsome. I don't care about acting in this movie. or the story. There's enough story to fill a 13 episode series. I want to see the canvas on which this movie is presented. I want to see if Maniratnam is actually better than those with ugly aesthetics like Shankar or loud theatrics like Rajamouli. Quote
