Anta Assamey
The Eluru Municipal Corporation results are out and as expected, the YSRCP was unstoppable. The TDP was reduced to just three seats. Most of its local stalwarts were defeated fair and square. Now a big question mark hangs over the future of the TDP, which ruled the district for decades. Even otherwise, the cadre is fast slipping away from the TDP. A majority of them have gone to the YSRCP, while a small fraction has gone to the BJP. The TDP leaders too have become inactive. In fact, the two former ministers – KS Jawahar of Kovvur and Pithani Satyanarayana of Penugonda – are not even showing up at the party meetings. Even when the party is organizing protest programmes, they are not seen anywhere near the protest sites. Ditto with former minister Peethala Sujatha of Atchanta. Former MP Maganti Babu and Thota Sita Mahalakshmi are also inactive these days. The party has two MLAs from the district – Mantena Ramaraju of Undi and Nimmala Ramanaidu of Palacole. Of these, Mantena is not stirring out of Undi. He has not even bothered to organized party programmes in Undi and nearby areas. He has not toured his own constituency in many days. Many TDP workers say that he has gone into a state of semi-retirement. The only TDP functionary who is active these days is Nimmala Ramanaidu. He has been actively organizing protests against the YSRCP government and is issuing statements criticisng the government actions. However, even his statements and protests are connected to the statewide protests and not related to the local politics in Palacole and West Godavari. The Eluru corporation results are likely to further demoralize the party organization in the district in the coming days. Desertions are likely to rise in West Godavari in the days to come, say analysts.
