my interest is in organic synthesis , so opted and started to work with a assistant prof who wasn't tenured in Dec, 2009.   He is bipolar, and I wasn't aware of his phycological issue and the impact it has on his behavior. After working close to 2 years - my prof, at that time got his green card and for some strange reasons he started to yell/abuse/argue in a aggressive manner with his peers, seniors and even HOD. After his tenure of 5 years - he didn't have any scientific accomplishments(which usually take time) and most importantly wasn't supported by the department due to his behavior. Hence moved out of the department. which left me and other two researchers in middle of nowhere.

With no choice - and I couldn't find any position in organic synthesis labs,  I moved to computational chem group - very well supported by my new PI who is tenured and well settled. After working for 2  years, I got a publication which allowed me to get my MS and move on.

Strangely i heard from my friends that so many professors have mental health issues and i dropped the idea of phD due to this reason.

@RoadRomeo dealing with people with mental health issues is no joke man. You don't know what to expect from them. My ex PI is the only prof that I came across with mental health issue. Looking back now I strongly feel it is a blessing in disguise that made me move from core chemistry field - which is has very challenging path after PhD.
