Both ways are okay , and almost similar distance and time frame.

Route 66 is fav for long drives and its straight unlike utah colorado ,, illinois. Also weather wise sunny climate esp in winters are good for drive

If time is no constraint and want to enjoy try route 50 west to east, did it in '16, took abt 12 days, but there are folks who done it in 7 days...

I did St.Louis to SFO in straight 40, hours back in 2012. Me and my friend drove non-stop one after another. via Salt lake city, Elko.. Reno.. Lake Tahoe....
