Meter tampering, Electricity theft on the rise in Florida....

[object Object]

Beware: Tampering with your electric meter can land you in jail. It is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine

Investigations by Duke Energy found cases throughout the utility's Florida service area where customers' bills decreased because of illegal adjustments to their electric meters. "It is fair to say we are seeing this type of scheme across the state," said Sterling Ivey, a Duke Energy spokesman.

Those who steal electricity use different methods. Usually, the meter box is left in place, and a line is still running to the residence without going through the meter. “Removing the smart meter is the most common way. They remove the meter face, and put something in its place to conduct electricity,”

In one case, the utility says a customer tampered with the wiring behind the meter and a portion of the electric consumption bypassed the meter altogether. The customer was back-billed for 38 months. Since most of the energy was still flowing through the meter, the amount billed was only $3,000 for about 25,000 kilowatt hours of stolen electricity plus $375 for the cost of the investigation.

Another example officials point to was a customer who also tampered with the wiring behind the meter, which burned up both the meter and the wiring. The customer was billed $1,700 for 12,000 kilowatt hours of stolen electricity and $350 for the cost of the investigation.

In a third case the company points to an account was back-billed for 20 months for internal meter tampering. The meter was registering about half of the consumption. The account was billed $8,500 for about 71,000 kilowatt hours of stolen electricity and $300 for the investigation.
