కాబూల్‌లోకి ప్రవేశించిన తాలిబన్లు అఫ్గానిస్తాన్‌ను పూర్తిగా హస్తగతం చేసుకోవడమేకాదు  ప్రపంచ ఇంధన ఆర్థిక వ్యవస్థకు కీలకమైన ఖనిజాల భారీ నిక్షేపాల ప్రాప్యతను నియంత్రించే సామర్థ్యాన్ని కూడా సొంతం చేసుకున్నారు. సంఘర్షణ, అవినీతి, అధికార లోపం కారణంగా గత పదేళ్లుగా దాదాపు పూర్తిగా ఉపయోగంలోకి రాకుండా ఉన్న లిథీయం నిక్షేపాలపై కూడా పట్టు సాధించారు. 

ఎలక్ట్రిక్ వాహనాలు, పునరుత్పాదక శక్తి బ్యాటరీలకు ఉపయోగపడే ఈ ఖనిజ వనరులు విరివిగా ఉపయోగంలోకి వస్తాయా, ఈ ఖనిజాల మైనింగ్‌ ట్రేడింగ్‌ను తాలిబన్లు సమర్ధవంతంగా నిర్వహించగలరా? ఖనిజాలు, విలువైన లోహాల నిధిగా పేరొందిన దేశంలో నల్లమందుకు ప్రత్యామ్నాయంగా  ప్రధాన ఆర్థిక వనరుగా మైనింగ్‌ను ఉపయోగించుకుంటారా? అనేది చర్చనీయాంశంగా మారింది. అమెరికన్ జియాలజిస్టులు దేశంలోని విస్తారంగా ఉన్న ఖనిజ సంపదను కనుగొన్న తరువాత  2010లో "సౌదీ అరేబియా ఆఫ్ లిథియం" గా పిలిచిన లిథియం ఖనిజ సంపదపై కూడా తాలిబన్లు తాజాగా పట్టు సాధించారు. దీని విలువ కనీసం 1 ట్రిలియన్ డాలర్లుగా ఉంటుందని అప్పట్లోనే అంచనా వేశారు.
