Also people who pay mortgage and not invest in 401k, historically this is not a good idea.

 

Yes you get equity in house. If you invest the same money in some S&P 500 fund, you will be LOT richer.

 

I agree house is an emotional thing, but try not to buy a house where you can not invest in 401k or other investment.

 

Dont buy a house and work for the bank to pay mortgage.

If the company is giving 401k match, then it's no brainer . Contribute at least till that match level. It's free money.
