ramu Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Fri, Oct 1 05:50 AMWith tennis making its debut at the Commonwealth Games in India, Sania Mirza wants her performance to be a memorable."I want the Indian contingent to win the maximum number of medals, of which I want to contribute a gold in women's singles," Mirza told The Indian Express as she arrived at the Commonwealth Games village on Thursday.Sania has planned her schedule to the last detail and it has a correct balance of match practice and rest. "I like to play an adequate number of matches as run-up to a major event and then rest for a few days to get my body ready to handle the pressures. I'm ready for the Games," she said.Sania Mirza will be spearheading the Indian attack with 20-year-old Poojashree Venkatesh as the second singles player. Rushmi Chakravarthi is the fourth member of the team and Nirupama Sanjeev— the tennis mom — will be the second mixed doubles duo partnering Rohan Bopanna, behind Sania who will try to match her Asian Games gold performance with Leander Paes. All hopes for a women's gold medal — helped on the way by high-profile withdrawals — will be resting on Sania's shoulders in women's singles but she feels nopressure."I am only thinking about victory. I am quite happy with my preparation and am looking forward to the Games," she said. And her preparation towards the Games has been on track with a strong performance at the Guangzhou International Open in China. She gained 15 places in the WTA singles rankings to be 129th and jumped 20 positions in the doubles to 67th after a steady show. Sania reached the quarter-finals of the singles event and won the doubles title along with Romania's Edina Gallovits in the tournament that was held in the second week of September. The controversy surrounding the Games and complaints of the village being unhygienic doesn't bother Sania. "I'm basically a positive person and prefer to look at the positives. As a tennis player, it's my job to give my best to my country and I'm looking forward to doing that with the rest of my team. As professional tennis players who travel 35 weeks in a year, we are used to handling conditions which are less than perfect in many centres of the world," she stressed sAni_monkey3
