Before 1947 gandhi was trying to make some fake relations with dalits so they can be included in hindus and then these people can claim leadership on their behalf as hindus. Aa time lo ittanti isolated instances konni annayi.

Before he is an athiest Periyar is an upper caste non-brahmin with deep beleifs in hinduism. He even made a trip benares. He got hungry and went to an ashram to eat food, he was denied entry as he had a moustace and is not a brahmin. He had to eat his food from a trash heap with dogs. Later he came to know that ashram was funded by his caste.

That was one key moment in life in shaping him.

In my opinion he is a brilliantly honest person who says things as he sees and he loves his own people. You cannot associate honesty with any of the brahminical folks.
