I did that for years - for me this is a way for me not to rely on her income. Invested max in 401k and rest in money market(when interest rates are reasonable) / savings/ other investments... It helped me to budget my expenses just on my income. Few of my friends also do the same and usually they use that only to buy jewelry etc.
