Irrespective of the different standards of making, Telugu and Hindi film industries have a close fight on who makes the highest number of films every year. Just a look at the figures says how neck to neck the fight.
No. of Telugu films* No. of Hindi films*
2005 268 245
2006 245 223
2007 241 257
2008 286 NA
2009 218 235

*Number as approved by Central Board of Film Certification, India

It is obvious that the Telugu film industry managed to stay on top of Bollywood more often than not. However, things changed a bit last year as Bollywood beat Tollywood. This year too Hindi industry seemed to have churned out more movies than Telugu so far.

One reason is that big stars like Pawan Kalyan and Mahesh Babu chose to stay away from movies for few years. However, together such big stars contribute to very few films per year.

The other reason could be the rising costs of production which seem to go higher and higher for big film producers. The major part of producers’ investment should be on the script and technology of the film. Instead, the big producers put themselves in a situation where the luxurious needs of the stars become vital than the film itself. As a result of the number of big film stars has come down.

On the other hand, most small film producers have begun to understand that getting their films released is a big task. Previously they had real estate boom to find money again. That situation has changed quite a bit since the past recession. As a result the number of small films being released also has come down.

While some also blame the volatile situation in Andhra Pradesh, the fact that there are films being made and released makes that argument invalid.

However what one needs to notice is this point – That apart from the likes of ‘Ye Maya Chesaave’, ‘Leader’, ‘Vedam’, ‘Prasthanam’, ‘Maryada Ramanna’ ‘Andari Bandhuvaya’ there are hardly any more Telugu films that work on different genres.

Incidentally the typical Telugu movies like ‘Simha’, ‘Don Seenu’, ‘Adurs’, ‘Darling’ and ‘Bindaas’ with their clichéd stories made more money than the ones mentioned in the previous list in the previous paragraph.

When one sees Hind films, the film making, packaging, and the number of genres that are touched is quite unique and ever expanding. Probably the audiences of Telugu cinema are getting bored to watch movie at a cinema, thus affecting the number of Teugu films made per year.

There can be no single reason why the number of movies made per year can go up or down. Probably it is time Telugu cinema needs to look at what’s the biggest reason affecting it!
