Their closest allies and biggest trade partners in Asia are worse than india in many ways

US does care about human rights and all that sh1t, but whenever it suits them. In India's case it suits them. Its a stick they will use to keep beating down India. To put them in their place, because India's constantly trying to stretch its diplomatic capacity beyond their capacity to handle it.

I dont know how India is irrelevant when India is poised to become the 3rd largest economy by the turn of this decade or the next.

if its just US talking down to 3rd world countries, does US lecture other nations similarly in public? for eg. Nigeria. Indonesia. which are also facing sectarian violence and a growing authoriatarian govt. and are also low per capita, but huge economies in size.

They actually do preach to Indonesia, Bangladesh  and Nigeria . Infact US talks more with Nigeria more than india these days . Hell ,even Pakistan is more relevant to US foreign policy than india 

Not saying india is totally irrelevant but it isn't as important , atleast for the current administration .

India's foreign policy is too dumb, and beyond its image of a secular democratic republic, India has nothing to offer the world in terms of ideas or goods.

the way Indians respond to accusations of being bigots is just offputting to a westerner.

I think they are prodding India to step up. atleast appearances. or atleast have a great PR like Israel does.
