Poor cannot afford newspapers  and don't watch politics on tv . They vote purely on  their daily needs . 

Middle class moved up the scale of need pyramid and looks for caste , religion , foreign relations , "development " , etc 

Most of which have zero effect on their lives but still strongly influences them

They are simply being indian. That is the purpose of india - to spread enemity/hate and discord between ancient people under the name of religion and consolidate delhi grip/.
