Boston brahmins was a dergotary word used to shame some wealthy protestant families in Boston area. These people were one of the first settlers in usa and made huge wealth. They used to keep other white people from their social clubs etc. So they were shamed by general public.

After being shamed they changed their behaviour. Now it is used to mock someone if he has airs of superiority.
