In an interesting revelation the Indian tourism department released some facts about the local Indian tourism.

And some facts stunned people all around.

One of the statistics showed that it is Andhra Pradesh that is the most preferred destination for the Indians!

Yes, you heard it right. The most preferred destination for Indians is not Goa, Karnataka or Himachal Pradesh, but Andhra Pradesh.

15.75 crore Indian tourists visited Andhra Pradesh in 2009. This was followed by Uttar Pradesh which received 13.48 crore and the third place goes to Tamil Nadu with 11.57 crores!

So how did these three states achieve this?

The tourism department said that the Indian tourists come to Andhra Pradesh mainly for Tirupathi, followed by Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam!

And for UP, the reason is Taj Mahal followed by holy places like Kasi. People go to Tamil Nadu mainly for the ancient structures like Mahabalipuram, Meenakshi temple etc followed by Chennai, according to the Indian tourism board.

Incidentally famed tourist states like Goa received only 21.27 lakh in the entire 2009!
