'Bathukamma Is Not Telangana Festival'

Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal is at it again. On Tuesday, he dismissed the claim of the Telangana leaders that the Bathukamma was a folk festival of Telangana region.

All these days, the Bathukamma festival has been regarded as the traditional Telangana folk festival Bonalu. And bowing to pressures from the Telangana leaders, the Rosaiah government, too, acknowledged it as an official festival of Telangana and released money to celebrate the same in the 10 districts of Telangana.

But Rajagopal came out with a different argument. He says the Bathukamma festival is celebrated all over the state, not just Telangana. He demanded that the government celebrate it as official festival across the state and release funds to all the districts. Rajagopal has already owned up Bonalu festival by sponsoring the same in Kanakadurga temple at Vijayawada this year. [b]By claiming the Bathukamma festival, too, he wants to prove that the Telugu culture is one and united. Hence, he wants to celebrate Telangana folk festivals in Andhra, too, in a big way.[/b]
