I will try to answer this with a story. This is also a good example of theory of relativity. Once Brahma curious to know if indeed the Vishnu is the supreme being ( while he is in Krishna avatar as a kid playing with his friends), so he kidnaps all his friends( yadav kids) and cows and hides them in brahmalok and gets on with his work . Krishna( Vishnu) being all knower not happy, to teach brahma a lesson, he expands and substitutes each friend and cows and continues the playing and returns back to their home. while brahma came back after some time( Earth time of 1 year), he was surprised to see all there, then krishna revealed all of him in all the forms and gives a call.. he saw many brahma's on their swan. Similarly Airavatha is brought in two places 1) In Pothana bhagavatham, where he refers that it out of Madhanam 2) In Ramayana, where it is believed to come from egg shelves in which Jatayu came out, when Brahma sang the hymns Both were Airthavatha's of different dimensions serving their master Indra of that dimension..
