India goes "all in" on crypto and NFT

The Indian Minister of Finance announces that a digital version of their currency will be launched already this year.

Finance Minister Normala Sitharaman announced the news in an annual budget speech in which she also announced a plan to tax income from digital assets, taxing 30% on profits from the sale and transfer of cryptocurrencies and NFTs. This corresponds to the country's highest tax rate.

The BBC writes that India is now following in China's footsteps, which has introduced testing with the digital yuan. In both cases, there has been an underlying hope that the introduction of digital currency will give a major boost to the digital economy.

Sitharaman also stated that digital currency will lead to more efficient and cheaper handling of the currency system.

- The tax rate is too high

The plan to introduce a separate, digital rupee has fallen into place with crypto traders. Sumit Gupta, co-founder of the Indian crypto platform CoinDCX, tells the BBC that the measure has a positive effect on other digital currencies as it is signaled that these are legitimate.

However, Gupta does not like the tax rate, which he believes is too high:

A tax rate of 30 percent is equivalent to the same as gain from speculative activities such as lotteries and gambling. The proposed rate is likely to be an obstacle for many who might otherwise consider investing in it.

Finansminister Normala Sitharaman kunngjorde nyheten i en årlig budsjettale der hun også annonserte en plan for å skattlegge inntekt fra digitale eiendeler, der man skattes 30% på profitt fra salg og overføring av kryptovaluta og NFT-er. Det tilsvarer landets høyeste skattesats.

BBC skriver at India nå følger Kinas fotspor, som altså har innført testing med digital yuan. I begge tilfellene har det vært et underliggende håp om at innføringen av digital valuta skal gi et stort løft til den digitale økonomien.

Sitharaman uttalte også at digital valuta vil lede til mer effektiv og billigere håndtering av valutasystemet.

– Skattesatsen er for høy

Planen om å innføre en egen, digital rupi har falt i god jord hos krypto-handlere. Til BBC forteller Sumit Gupta, medgrunnlegger av den indiske kryptoplattformen CoinDCX, at tiltaket positivt påvirker andre digitale valutaer da det signaliseres at disse er legitime.

Gupta synes dog lite positivt om skattesatsen som han mener er for høy:

En skattesats på 30 prosent tilsvarer den samme som gevinst fra spekulative aktiviteter som lotteri og gambling. Den foreslåtte satsen kommer sannsynligvis til å være en hindring for mange som ellers kunne vurdert å investere i det.
