Yeah they consider Southern artists not representing the Indian nation. 

Case in point, KJ Yesudas. His ability to sing both classical and non classical is unparalalled, even SPB himself used to call him Anna due to his ability to sing any song be it Hindustani classical, Carnatic or film playback better than anyone else. 

But KJ yesudas ki emi importance ichindi ee Bullahwood.

while Lata M started early than him in 50's itself where there is less singers and continued where too much hands on bollywood made her to get BR easily

its true fact that highest awards are more reach to north india/ bollywood
