Midnightsun Posted February 14, 2022 Report Posted February 14, 2022 PC Mag has had the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22 + tested. The conclusion provides some answers but also raises some questions: these are the fastest Android devices ever, but what's the point of overheating? Still far behind Apple Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 definitely provides a performance boost from previous processors, but is still not close to Apple's A15 chip found in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Processor performance is not necessarily crucial by and large, but still has a noticeable impact on various applications, such as video editing and gaming, which can be a more enjoyable experience the better the components perform. Test performed by British PC Mag. On all test types, the new S22 series for Samsung bypasses both older Android models and Pixel 6 with Tensor chip, but must be beaten by the iPhone 13 Pro Max by a good margin. One of the tests that is pointed out as particularly interesting is the Basemark Web test where the Galaxy S22 scores eight percent higher than the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but must be beaten by the iPhone 13 Pro Max which gets twice as high a score, much thanks to the differences between Safari- the Apple browser versus the Chrome browser on Android phones. Advertisement Galaxy S22 numbers disappoint - what happened to raw AMD RDNA 2 graphics? Gets hot and performs weaker PC Mag revealed one worrying thing when they tested the S22 Ultra: namely that it showed a tendency to get hot during use and thus gave significantly worse results in the tests over time. In the FPS test, the phone went from offering 28 FPS in a program to give only 19, while in the Geekbench test it went from 1232 to 802 - the latter while the phone had been in use for a period so that it had managed to get hot. A similar throttling test was performed with the previous generation Galaxy phones without showing the same symptom, so that PC Mag speculates that a future software update from Samsung may fix the problem.
