National Labs ante most of them will be Fed ... So doing 2 jobs parallel I will not suggested...

But definitely secure and chill untundi ... except for once in a while ...

I worked couple of years back (non-IT), which national lab ? there are couple of them. Which field?

Payroll on Battelle ? for most of National labs Battelle is the one who manages people including researchers. In the lab which I worked most of the IT positions are temporary and few positions to support ongoing research projects, some thing like setting up aws or azure platform for researchers, building project websites and dashboards etc. such jobs end once project ends and ran out of money or you will be placed in another project if available.

Since it’s a National lab they take data non disclosure and background checks pretty seriously, so second job depends on what aggrement they make you sign.

flexible timings mean you can start your day at 11am if no meetings, no questions asked, but meetings unte you have to join. But sometime they bombard with work if you have to work for funded projects. If job is something related to lab administration side then mostly chill.

Lab runs on funded projects either federal or private, so if researchers brings in more projects, lab will have more funds more job security… if federal govt allocate less budget for research then less funds so low job security.
