New Delhi/Melbourne: New Delhi summoned the high commissioner of Australia, Mr Peter Varghese, and handed over a demarche on the issue of racist emails in which Australian police official joked about the death of an Indian.

According to a report in the Australian newspaper Herald Sun, police officers of Victoria were caught joking about the electrocution of an Indian train passenger and suggesting that it could be "a way to fix the Indian student problem" in Melbourne.

The officers circulated a video clip showing the death of an Indian travelling on the roof of a train. He was electrocuted when he touched an overhead power cable after the train stopped at a station.

A report from Melbourne said that four Australian police officers were sacked in connection with the circulation of racist emails and disciplinary action has been initiated against 15 others. The scandal involving the police officers follows a number of assaults on Indian students living in Melbourne.

The Indian external affairs minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, said the implication of police officers in such behaviour, specially vis-à-vis the Indian community in Australia, is shocking. "We understand that investigation is under way. We sincerely hope that apart from taking action against the police officers concerned, the Australian authorities will also take necessary and effective measures to address concerns about the safety of all people of Indian origin in Australia," he said.

The MEA followed up the minister's remarks by saying in a statement that "it was conveyed to him (the Australian envoy Mr Peter Varghese) that such an entrenched bias among sections of law enforcers towards the Indian community is a matter of serious concern. Such behaviour and attitudes had no place in any society. It was hoped that the Australian authorities would take necessary and effective measures to address concerns regarding the safety of all people of Indian origin in Australia."

The MEA statement concluded by saying that the envoy conveyed his government's condemnation of the incident and handed over copies of the statements already made by the premier of Victoria and the chief commissioner of the Victoria police. For his part, Mr Varghese, said that the email was offensive and unacceptable.

"It was contrary to the principles of respect and tolerance which underpinned Australian society."

A spokesperson for the Australian foreign minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, said the reported contents of emails are outrageous and offensive. "Such communications have no place whatsoever in Australian society let alone among the professional ranks of the Victorian police force. They deserve condemnation," he said.
