it depends on how strong and different is the mutation from the original one.

Vaccine lo unnadi base model ...to start with.

lets say there was a mutation of base model, but it can stilll be tacked by base model vaccine, it will fight and vaccinated person if infected can still fight it off. say with 95% efficacy..

ade mutation model is more different than the base model, then the fighting efficacy drops....but vaccine can still fight..

over the period, the mutation fight efficacy  by base model significantly drops and affects the vaccinated person as well..

thats when booster or multiple doses needed, which will reset the base model to new variant.

Good question ... I do not have a concrete answer to this bro ... but we will still say mutations because the transmission rate is higher which is giving the the Covid virus to transmit more and mutate faster...which makes it tough to create a vaccine to counter all the strains or mutations ...

The sooner everyone is vaccinated to stop the spread of virus... you can eradicate it... till then its nirantara prakriya ante...Eventually  they will come up with one vaccine covering all the concerned mutations... just like polio and it will be eradicated... but its a long long process like Polio... 

To your last point Polio virus is sometimes airborne too bro .... not as much as COVID..

That is the main reason for vaccine seemed to be more effective... But it did take very long to be eradicated...

Ippudu people are not that pro for a vaccine which will only delay the process...

Polio vaccine is inactivated Virus vaccine, except 3-4 whole virus inactivated vaccines in the world everything else is a part of Corona virus alpha variant or spike protein based.

aa 3-4 vaccines lo bharat biotech Covaxin, China vadi sinofarm, UK/ Germany Valneva unnai.. these offer more broader immunity than band aids vaccines given across the world, so unless majority are vaccinated mutations dont stop and some mutations are deadly like Delta ( mutated in a stage 4 cancer patient ) or some are not like Omicron (mutated in HIV patient).

Merck in US was trying for a whole virus inactivated vaccine but gave up as Pfizer and Moderna were ready and it wasnt viable for them.

May be corona virus should be compared with HIV…not polio…
