EVERY INDIAN ABROAD AN AMBASSADOR OF INDIA

October 2010

There are about 3 million Indians in USA. There are more than that in the rest of the  world. Each one is an Ambassador of India. Americans perceive India through their interactions on a daily basis with these 3 million people.

If each Indian meets one new American in his/her daily life, that will be equal to one billion interactions in a year. In other words it is equivalent to one billion views of India, however small the impact may be. The cumulative impact is what counts.

I will give an example of one such interaction. An American named Bob was pissed off at me because I corrected all his business correspondence that went out of the office though I did it at the request of his boss. Once he said to me, “ Rao, it is funny that an Indian is correcting the English of an American”. I said calmly, “Bob, I will correct you again. You should have said,--‘An Indian American correcting the English of a Caucasian American’”. He never again commented after that. He brought all his letters to me voluntarily for ‘review’.

Another example of an interaction is with a devout Christian colleague named Frank. He said, ”Rao, you have been in America for over 35 years. Have you considered becoming a Christian? I replied, “Frank after you become a Hindu, I will then consider converting to Christianity”. He never uttered a word about religion or conversion after that. He is still a very close friend of mine.

Another typical question is about the Bindi / Bottu on the forehead of Indian women. They think it is a permanent tattoo. It is really beautiful. Why is it always red in color? I answer that traditionally married women wear the Bindi, but nowadays young girls wear it for fashion.

How does an Indian woman wear a six yard long piece of cloth (the Sari) without buttons or zippers? I tell them to come to our house and my wife will show them how to wear the sari along with hot Indian vegetarian snack for a treat. Several of them now wear saris to formal Indian functions—they like the exposure of the belly button rather than large portions of their breasts.

Rao, was your marriage arranged? Of course, it was. Next day the whole office of 300 people is buzzing in whispers, “Rao’s marriage was arranged”.

How can you marry and love someone you do not know before marriage?  We marry and then love. You love, date and live together for a few years and then marry. And yet  we have very few divorces in India compared to more than 55% divorces in the Western world and America. No wonder American girls prefer Indian boys as their husbands. They know that once they marry an Indian boy, they do not have to worry about looking for another husband for life.

Yoga is another popular phenomenon catching up in America- popularized by the Indian diaspora. Every small town has a Yoga Center or a Meditation Center.

Words that are commonly used but not fully understood are: Guru, Pundit, Karma, Asana and Curry.

Gone are the days when India was perceived as a land of snake charmers and rope climbers.

We are now a rising economic power in the world. Many Americans and Europeans are coming to India as Medical, Spiritual and IT Tourists to find out what makes India tick. We have come a long way. But there is longer way to go. We have yet to learn punctuality, cleanliness, hygiene and to take pride in our culture.

There are many Indians at the top level of the Business ladder and many more in the Government sector serving as Governors, Senators, Mayors and Councilors. If a black man can be President of the United States of America, the next generation is likely to see a person of Indian origin as the President. Bobby Jindal, the Governor of Louisiana is a rising star on the horizon in the political circles. If he changes his speech writer, he will be more popular.

Each Indian has done his small part till now and that is why Indians are allowed to migrate to USA in such large numbers.
