that's why I always ask the person if they get tips or not when the owner is not around and only give them if they say yes.

one should understand how regular servers get paid vs staff in indian places. 

Regular restaurants lo wait staff makes $3 per hour and tips. So akkada tip ivvatam chala important. Food baagoka poyina kooda, service baagunte i will tip 15% at least. Server pichi naatakalu padithe 10% max. 

Indian places lo staff gets paid either hourly or fixed amount (day shift 100, afternoon shift 125 etc.) Service baagundi, tip vaalla chetiki velte I am happy to add, if not no way.
