If your job is in NYC and you want to live close to NYC, jersey city downtown is pretty expensive and a pretty nice place. It will set you back up to 3500 for 1bed 1bath. If you want to live near Journal Square(Desi neighborhood of JC) which is not that pretty(I am being humble to say this), you can get a single room for 800 or 2B2B for 2200. Add 100$ for train. In this case you need atleast 120k to 150k to afford.

If you choose to stay little far like Edison or north Jersey you can save on rent like 2200 for 2B2B in a nice condo but you need to shell out atleast 400$ for train to NYC+parking at train station. In this case you can manage with 120-130k.

If your job is in other parts of NJ, it's no brainer to stay in Central jersey or North Jersey close to your office. In this case if you are single/young family you can do well with 100-110k.
