The country's first air-conditioned double-decker rake comprising 10 coaches rolled out of the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here today for use on the Howrah-Dhanbad section of the Eastern Railways within the next 15 days.

"These futuristic, high-speed, stainless steel coaches, including two power cars, are comparable with the best international trains," RCF general manager Pradeep Kumar told reporters on the occasion.

The double-decker coaches are being introduced to cater to the heavy rush of commuters in the high-density corridors, offering AC travel at a lower cost. The railway board will decide about the fare of the double-decker train.

Pradeep Kumar said the first double-decker train would start running on the Howrah-Dhanbad section of Eastern Railways after clearance from the commissioner of railway safety.

Kumar said the new-design coaches were capable of running at a speed of 160kph and had been tested at a speed of 180kph.

"RCF in association with Research Development and Standard Organisation (RDSO) Lucknow finalised the design of the double-decker coaches and the first prototype was rolled out for oscillation trials within a record nine months," he said.

Narrating the salient features of the double-decker rake, Kumar said, "These coaches have a carrying capacity of 128 passengers in comparison to 78 passengers in Shatabdi chair cars. There are 54 seats each on the upper and lower decks besides 20 seats at both ends."

The railway board plans to run the next double-decker train on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section of Western Railway, an RCF source said.
