Tesla Drops Model Y Starting Price Below the Average US Vehicle (750 ata)

Tesla Inc. is now charging less for the cheapest version of the Model Y SUV than what the typical new vehicle sells for in the US, a threshold Elon Musk crossed in blazing fashion.

At $46,990, the base Model Y now costs $759 less than the average amount paid for a car or truck in the US. The differential between these figures has changed by more than $20,000 since the middle of last year.

A string of price cuts has brought the price of Tesla’s cheapest Model Y below that of the average new vehicle in the U.S., reports Bloomberg. America’s best-selling EV of 2022 now costs $46,990 for the base model – $759 less than the average car or truck. No carmaker has slashed prices so steeply in modern times, wiping out a $20,000 premium for the Model Y over the average vehicle from a year ago. While CEO Elon Musk denies he’s starting a price war, a Morgan Stanley analyst tells Bloomberg other automakers may curtail EV investment as a result.

 

• Musk has said he would continue to cut prices, despite the profit hit revealed in last week’s earnings.
• Ford CEO Jim Farley said price battles are “breaking out everywhere.” Renault is rethinking its pricing strategy in response to Tesla’s cuts and Chinese automakers are also offering steep discounts.
