Its amazing how each human has a unique finger print. But, How did we get to a conclusion that its unique and adopted the fingerprint technology?

My question was .. it has been known to us that finger prints are unique since long time. How did someone come to a conclusion with out advanced computers those days? 

Did they do manual study?
