Teaching math to kids

Do you teach math to your kids? Teaching techniques are different in US schools. I have realized we have to take personal interest, sending them to tuitions, math academies has not been useful.

A simple technique I use while teaching math is - I ask my kid to solve one of the problems. I say don't worry about right or wrong. Just do based on what they teched you in school. Once done, I look at it and even if its wrong, I say gimme Hi-Fi, good job. Then ask her to explain how they got the answer.

1. Kids give honest answers and willing to learn when they are not stressed. No yelling.

2. When they are explaining, I understand how teachers are explaining their methods (which are quiet different from ours) so that we adopt same things while explaining. 

3. When they are explaining, you will clearly understand where they went wrong. Do not correct them when they are explaining. 

Now you know where they went wrong. It could be simple basics like addition/subtraction/fractions, etc. So i try to fix them by explaining that topic and give them a few simple problems to fix it. Now I ask them to do the original problem again. 

Repeat the process until they get it right. Patience is the key here. Strictly no yelling. If you are losing patience take a break. Ask wife to monitor your actions once in a while and ask to intervene if your tone is getting aggressive.

Join them in Gifted and Talented Magnet school, kids will learn on their own

At times you will also see kids know the right way but doing silly mistakes. When we do this walk through procedure, they will learn to be more cautious esp cross check them again at places where they usually go wrong. 

We are only making them aware of where they usually make mistakes.

I have tried a private tutor and even local math schools. Did not make any difference. Hence took it on myself. My kid improved a lot and gets straight As now.

These are good if kids are responding to them and learning well there.

Agree. Its not everyone's cup of tea. Post is for people who may be in same boat as I was.

I stopped teaching math to kids now as they are leaning on other students and helping each other.

i tried that…my kid got confused…

teacher teaching methods are different…so maths lo vaallu ela nerchukuntunnaro observe cheste better instead of we teaching them…

but we should always discuss with them other topics like science, social, history…etc

Khan Academy, and other online sources you can easily learn their teaching methods. Or usually their notes or text books has examples. I also ask my kid to explain what the teacher teached. 

Alochistunna .. last few years inta effort petta .. oka math academy nene start cheste better emo .. or tuitions .. almost 35$/hr ikkada.

I never touched other subjects as my kids are good in them. Problem math and not many good teachers here.

Mee kids age and class enta 

maa vadu prek ippudu he learned by his interest in maths in summer holidays but now he don’t want to learn now. I left him. It is better keep him happy until first grade
