It wasn't fun for any of us warm weather enjoying folks, like myself, who is freezing when it drops into the 50's. It's very possible we could see something similar this coming winter in Texas, albeit, not as bad, according to Farmer's Almanac. GET OUR FREE MOBILE APP Snowmageddon of 2021 Yeah, being snowed in for that week in February of 2021 was not fun at all. Many of us didn't have power for a couple of days. I camped out in my bedroom under a couple of blankets for warmth while luckily still being able to work. As crazy as it sounds, I prefer these 100 plus degree temps we're experiencing this summer in East Texas. Being cold is absolutely miserable for me. For the 2023-2024 Winter, the always accurate Farmer's Almanac sees the potential for a similar storm in mid-January. Will it be on the same scale as 2021? That can't be determined yet. Texans will need to bundle up, as unseasonably cold weather is forecast throughout January and February, with a possible major winter storm in mid-January. 2023-2024 Winter Forecast - Farmer's Almanac Winter Forecast for Texas Overall, Farmer's Almanac is forecasting above normal precipitation with colder than normal temperatures for Texas. This is because of the El Nino over the Pacific Ocean. The El Nino is also what's causing the extremely hot temperatures over us right now. There is also the possibility of a winter storm moving in late January that can be categorized as a major winter storm. But it is hard to determine just how severe it could be at this point. Until then, we're going to have to deal with these 100 degree days for at least another two months and possibly into October. We've had Halloween's that were in the upper 90's before. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for this year. Take These 6 Items Out of Your Car Before an Extreme East Texas Cold Snap Make sure these items are out of your vehicle or they could be damaged, or damage your car, during a cold snap. Gallery Credit: unsplash.com Canned Food Donna Spearman / unsplash.com Canned Food Just like in extreme heat, a canned food can can swell in the extreme cold. However, as long as the can hasn't rusted or split at the seams, the food should still be good to eat. Canned Soda or Bottled Drinks James Yarema / unsplash.com Canned Soda or Bottled Drinks How many of you have put a drink in the freezer to chill it quickly before drinking it but forgot about it? What did that drink do while in the freezer too long? It burst. The same thing can happen if left in your car during extreme cold. Wood Instruments Karim Mmanjra / unsplash.com Wood Instruments Okay, so this one is a little out there because about 1 in a 1,000 of you would have an instrument made of real wood in your trunk or back seat. But for that 1 in a 1,000 person, the extreme cold can damage that instrument. Electronics Alexandre Debieve / unsplash.com Electronics In the summer, an electronic device can overheat if used after being left in a hot car. During an extreme cold event, the battery could be damaged or, if warmed up too quickly, condensation can build up on the screen which would damage it. Eye Glasses Wu Yi / unsplash.com Eye Glasses If you leave a pair of glasses in your car, the extreme cold could damage the frame, the lenses or the coating on the lenses. Medications Laurynas Mereckas / unsplash.com Medications I am a Type 1 diabetic so I always have my med pack with my glucose meter and insulin pen with me in the car when running errands. Just like in extreme heat, extreme cold could damage the insulin. Same thing with certain medications in pill form. The extreme cold may not physically damage the medication, but it could make it less effective. Indoor Snow Day Fun Activities Gallery Credit: Drew Kirby/Canva Balloon Tennis Mothercould via YouTube Balloon Tennis Balloon tennis is an easy way for the kids (and adults) to have fun an a day they're cooped up. All you need is a balloon, paper plate paddle and a net. Tape a ruler or spoon on the back of the paper plate and use tape on the floor or a string to make a net. With multiple kids, make a tournament bracket. Slime Drew Kirby/ Canva Slime Ahh the dreaded slime. Easy to make and hours of fun for the kids. 1 bottle of Elmer's Glue 1/2 tsp baking soda 1.5 tablespoons of contact solution Water Mix bottle of glue with baking soda in a bowl. Add up to 1/4 cup of water for stretchy slime. Add contact solution as you knead the slime until you get the consistency you want. Add food coloring or glitter to be fancy. Will be messy, make sure you do it in a place that's away from furniture and carpet. Good idea to spread plastic in the area you're making it. Indoor Camping Drew Kirby/ Canva Indoor Camping Set up the tent, sleeping bags, strand of lights and let the imagination take over. Have meals like hot dogs, food on a stick or an aluminum foil meal before microwaving s'mores. Craft Time Drew Kirby/ Canva Craft Time Most kids enjoy art and art time. Creating snowflake art can eat up a lot of indoor time. Folding paper in random ways and cutting shapes on the fold will create the snowflake. Using paint, colors, markers or glitter & glue, let the kids create a winter scene indoors. White Play Dough Snowman Drew Kirby/ Canva White Play Dough Snowman Playing with play dough is one thing, making it first adds a whole new element. You need 2 cups corn starch and 1 cup unscented lotion or hair conditioner. Mix them together and you're set to go. Add a little sparkle with silver glitter...if you dare. Once you've made the dough, allow the kids to roll out balls and use items around the house to make their snowman. Indoor Blanket Fort Drew Kirby/ Canva Indoor Blanket Fort Easy activity that uses blankets, couch cushions, chairs, and creativity. Start with a simple fort and add tunnels, hidden rooms and let the imagination run wild. Pack a lunch and let them explore their cave system all day. Puppet Shows Drew Kirby/ Canva Puppet Shows Creating puppets is easy. Let the kids create their own sock puppet or use stuffed animals to put on a show. Add the element of video or Facetime with family to increase the fun. Create A Photobooth Drew Kirby/ Canva Create A Photobooth Really simple. Set up a background. Have the kids create the props (funny glasses, masks, hats, signs...etc), break out Halloween costumes or fancy outfits and let the photo sessions begin. Indoor Snowball Fights Drew Kirby/ Canva Indoor Snowball Fights Probably not a good idea to let the kids bring snow in the house, but rolled up socks are just as fun. We used to play sockball. Using rolled up socks as a ball and our arms as a bat. Everyone plays baseball on their knees. Tape Racetrack Drew Kirby/ Canva Tape Racetrack Good old masking tape is perfect for this activity. Use the tape to create a racetrack for matchbox cars. Adding in obstacles and other interesting features. Building the track is only half the fun. Race the cars around and then change up the track.
