dude, no one should hire house helps in the first place is my point.

if parents are old, they should go into living assistance or live with their kids or relatives. lets not pretend like maids are getting wealthy on the 5k per month we dish out.  that's like an estate owner claiming that because his slaves got richer than him, which means all slaves are richer than their respective owners.

the work is underpriced, and just because a few of them are smart enough to work that system to their benefit, doesn't mean the price we pay maids is the right price.

An ideal thought but these jobs help them get by , without these jobs they would be starving

Government doesn't have enough money to give everyone a respectable standard of living . Already middle class is taxed highly , anymore could just force them to move out

still a lot of NRIs main reason about moving to India is to be able to afford house help.

Hopefully the wages keep raising , you can't eliminate such jobs quickly otherwise it would cause chaos

There is a gradual transition away from such work even in villages

I am talking about a city (Hyderabad) and housekeep in our community. Of course no background checks. They all make good money as I know how much neighbors pay.

My dad till today cleans the tree leaf's fallen in our house (we have trees around house and a big plot). Hez paralyzed but still does this and says he don't care what others think and its exercise for him and he enjoys doing this. Same with mom. She does all her work.

But they are getting old (75 and 70). I keep an eye on these developments coz at some point they have to take help. Mom talked about the incident of housekeep holding owner's neck today evening and I was shocked. Hence the post.

okay. I'm permanently salty about this. nothing I said is an attack on you personally.

I also have a parent who's very active.. and will be for atleast another decade. I don't want to further irritate you with my observance of the upper middle class life in India. wish you the best to find a solution for your parents.

Old age homes - Nice concept but parents who are used to independent living and living on their terms, not easy to live there.

These helpers work 5-6 houses and each house they make between 8-10k. I am not kidding. Its decent money.

Its a healthy discussion and I have not seen anything from you as personal attack.

I understand what you are saying wrt upper middle class. But things have changed in last 10 yrs. Just to give you an example.

You are going on your vehicle and stop at a fruit vendor and they quote rs.100/kg for grapes. You know the rate is only rs 50/kg or your parents tell you its high price, dont buy. You are coming back quietly without saying anything. You will hear this person mock you saying "you dont have means to buy and use curse words". Why do they exhibit this behavior?

Which is a positive sign of society advancing , hopefully everyone gets respectable jobs and stop doing unskilled work

Ruling and demanding higher money is fine. Its demand and supply. They have to maintain  respect for their employers. If they are rude, I understand reciprocating but not otherwise.

I've never faced this. but then I used to live right at the center of the city, in an area where my parents lived for decades, and I know almost everyone in the area.. we even moved some of them to our home during the 2015 floods, and an even bigger one in late 80s for a few days.

ofcourse I also never drive a car (except when my mom insists I do, which is rare).. I always cycle with panniers and get stuff from markets where there's another vendor nearby, which keeps the price competitive.

I also buy a lot from the same people, so everybody knows me by name. I don't know about Hyd, but in Chennai mostly a smile and some small talk does the trick. and I'm not even a people person, so if I can do it, it must be an easy thing for everyone too.

when I do travel outside of my city, I do expect to be ripped off, and its fine with me.

Panimanishi's in hyderabad are ruling. There was a time when they used to ask for work. Now they pick and choose who they work for. Probably a result of ppl getting dependent on them for day to day works.

there are apartments and housing projects (that used to be pitched to me) for old age parents. where you buy an apartment and can live independently while they offer all other services to you. including house helps.

my mom is going to forever live with me, so I never cared about these projects..but a few years back, I used to get a lot of calls asking me to consider buying one.

Big gated communities lo situation better anukonta. Society makes rules like how much to pay per task, how many days leave, background checks. Power of collective bargaining.
