Indira Gandhi was wildly sucessful politician , even more than modi in many ways 

But she was a utter disaster in economics , ruined the country with her nationalisatin drives. India was at peer with South Korea , Taiwan and several countries at that time when she started nationalisatin drive and india came close to sub Saharan Africa 

Imagine a situation where modi took over all private IT firms and put them under government control. The entire industry would collapse in a few years , she justified it in the name of "garibi hatao" 

She didn't make poor people rich but she made everyone poor

Till 1968, all private banks in India were limited to big cities only. All of them were monopolised by industrialists, with the share of industry in the credit disbursed by private banks doubling between 1951 and 1968 from 34 per cent to 68 per cent, while agriculture was receiving less than 2 per cent of the total credit. 

Within three decades, the number of bank branches in the country increased from 8,000 to 60,000. The rural deposit share reached 15.5 per cent in March 1991, from 6.3 per cent in December 1969, and the credit share increased from 3.3 per cent to 15 per cent. Banks were asked to direct funds towards areas that the government wanted to develop. 

Nationalisation also strengthened the Green Revolution. Its aim was to make the country self-reliant in food security. 

Gross domestic savings almost doubled as a percentage of the national income in the 1970s. 

At the same time, there was an increase of nearly 800 per cent in deposits in India’s public sector bank branches, and a massive 11,000 per cent jump in advances (loans). The share of small-scale industrial units in total bank credit increased from 6 per cent in June 1968 to 12 per cent in June 1973. Steady increases were recorded in the share of rural areas in aggregate credit and deposits. 

Side effect: Reduced profitability of banks.

Really?? That one operation had a domino effect and caused deaths of thousands (may be lakhs) of people (Sikhs, Hindus, army, police etc) and is the reason for instability in north India for several decades.. they should have tried for a diplomatic solutionbut indira was too arrogant about it. The army started a military operation on a Sikh holy day where there were thousands of people inside the temple..

Nehru & Indira & Rajiv Gandhi are the reasons for India's poverty & root-cause of all the evils that India is facing today. For example their worst foreign policy. India didn't ally with the US like China did when the US was in its most powerful phase. Nehru allying with the soviet & worse, Indira Gandhi irritated Richard Nixon & Kissinger with her stupid acts & as a result, it was a final death blow for India-US relations which the Indians are still facing its effect after 50 years.(Kissinger is 100 years old, still active in politics). Singapore was not far away from India. Prime MInister Lee Kwen Yu did wonders with the country staring as the PM one of the poorest nations in the world to retiring as the PM of one of the richest countries! Deng Xiaoping reformed economic fate of China which they're enjoying the fruits today. These two are the contemporaries of Nehru, Indira & Rajiv Gandhi. These two are the Asian countries. They succeeded while India miserably failed.
