This is good news for farmers who are going to be benefitted from this. It would be a great project if it’s financially viable as well. . 

It is all about Water security, without water there is nothing.  portion of this also being allocated to Hyderabad city water needs.

If you want to understand  water security and how lift irrigation California works see this video. If they didn’t do what they di in 1960/70s California would be a desert and not as wealthy or agriculturally rich.

 they are now building a reservoir  costing $50 billion as water security measures. For LA and south CA the water is pumped 500-600 miles from north CA(Sierra ) passing through arduous mountain ranges 

The total cost of all projects in Telangana in not even $20 billion and if we have to do it few years down the line the cost will be exponential. Population is growing, requirements for water is growing - plan and secure it or perish in the future

A good video on CA water problem is being dealt with. 

• Identify regions to hold water, build dams as necessary.
• Cover the Electricity costs of pumping water by using the dams to generate water when water is released
• Take Environmental factors and other marine species into consideration and not disrupt it.

Good initiative by Telangana with this project. Its great news for farmers. Farmers are not farming coz its not profitable these days. % of farm land in the country is coming down. India should invest in these projects and get back the focus on agriculture.

Likewise, it would be good if govt also focus on on the lakes around the city which supply water (Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar). So many encroachments as these lands have become pricey.
