Its actually not unique at all in Tamil. Its the common dry humour that you can see in all Tamil movies, until Vadivelu started dominating the comedy scene.

nelson movies have some dark comedy elements, but most of it is simply rehashing regular Tamil humour in the streets. He captures how chennai people speak to each other better than a lot of modern directors do. That way his films are relatable.
