A major 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's coast on Monday, but the India tsunami warning centre said there was no threat of generation of any killer waves.

"Based on pre-run model scenarios, tsunami threat does not exist," said a bulletin issued by Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) minutes after the earthquake.

ITEWC, which functions through the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, said there was no confirmation of the quake triggering a tsunami.

"There is no confirmation about triggering of tsunami so far. An investigation is underway to determine if a tsunami has been triggered by this earthquake," the ITEWC said in a bulletin issued at 8:18 PM.

The quake hit Indonesia's Kepulauan Mentawai Region at 8:10 pm IST at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The earthquake prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre to issue a statement saying there is a risk of a localised tsunami, although it added that "a destructive, widespread tsunami threat does not exist" based on historical earthquake data.
